This is a superb example of German violin making from the late 19th century, and it is in almost unplayed condition. It bears the authentic label of “Wilhelm Duerer fecit Eisleben anno 1899 Registered” This was the top-of-the-line of the Wilhelm Duerer Stradivarius models, and it is described in the F. S. Myers catalog of 1912 as follows (see ad picture): No. 75071 Straduarius, dark transparent amber var- nish showing the beautiful grain of the old selected wood, ebony trimmed. rosewood pegs, fluted tail- piece, superior workmanship, tone of remarkable power and brilliancy. Each…………………..95.74 $95.74 was a very high price for a violin in 1912! The violin sings with a beautiful tone from low to high. The sound is clean and full all the way up the neck. It has a strong resonant voice on the lower strings, and a silvery soprano voice on the higher strings. It has excellent bow response, plenty of volume, and does not lose timbre when played softly. Send me a message to request a sound sample, and tell me what kind of music you play (old-timey, classical, or contest). This violin is great for all of these styles. The tone woods are gorgeous. The two-piece top is made from spruce with a uniformly fine grain across the top, and the back, neck, and ribs are made from maple with beautiful figure and flame. The dark amber varnish is highly transparent, and was carefully and artistically shaded over a golden ground. It is not an artificially antiqued violin, and there is very little wear to the varnish other than a few minor nicks and scratches (see pictures). There are no cracks or repaired cracks in the top or back. I purchased this violin from the daughter of the original owner. The bridge, nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece are all set-up to proper proper playing specifications. The fingerboard, pegs, and tailpiece are high-quality dense black ebony. This violin was built on an Italian Stradivarius model, and the arching and edges, and corners are precisely made. The length of the back is a 357mm. The workmanship is clean and precise both inside and out. The scroll and peg-box are finely-carved and the purfling is expertly inlaid. The f-holes are remarkable with crisply pointed wings. There is very little wear on the corners or inside the treble C-bout. All 4 corners are blocked. This violin in this condition would sell for about $2,500 at a dealer. Please study the pictures closely as they are an essential part of the description. Please ask me any questions before you buy. I can send you additional pictures if you would like. I have included detailed un-retouched pictures and described it as best that I can. The violin will be carefully packed in an old case for shipping. I can include a brand new Toshira Deluxe dart-shaped case from Shar Music for an additional $50. The Toshira case is a good suspension case with a strong plywood shell. If you buy this violin and decide it isn't what you were expecting, you can return it by USPS Priority 1 or 2-day Express, insured and undamaged, within 7 days for a full refund excluding my actual shipping charge. You are responsible for the return shipping charges. It is obviously not returnable if the violin has been damaged in any way.
