For Sale: A Fine Red Violin by Roth and Lederer c. 1900, Germany - $1,499 USD

This violin was made by Ernst Heinrich Roth in collaboration with Max Lederer in his early years before he started the great E. H. Roth firm. It is a beautiful example early 20th century German violin making, and it is in absolutely superb condition. It bears the authentic label of Roth and Lederer: Antonius Stradivarius Made by Roth & Lederer The violin also bears the handwritten number “143” on the inside back. The particular violin sings with a beautiful focused tone from low to high. The sound is full all the way up the neck. It has a strong baritone voice on the lower strings, and a silvery soprano voice on the higher strings. It has excellent bow response, plenty of volume, and does not lose timbre when played softly. It is neither excessively dark nor excessively bright, but has a range of tone colors that are ideal for an expressive violinist. Please message me if you’d like a sound sample. This violin exhibits the quality that Ernst Heinrich Roth violins in the 1920’s became famous for. The workmanship is excellent and the tone woods are beautiful. It has a two-piece back of beautifully figured and flamed maple. The sides are of of similar maple and the top is made of straight narrow-grain spruce. The neck is of perfect measurements and made of fine maple, and the scroll is carefully carved and finished. The edges are very nicely carved, and the purfling inlaid with great accuracy. The f-holes are precisely cut in the Stradivarius style. The violin has a beautiful and bold transparent red varnish that is in superb original condition. This red varnish is highly characteristic of Roth and Lederer violins. The pegs are fine rosewood, the chinrest and endpin are jet-black ebony, and the tailpiece is a “Wittner Ultra Composite” with 4 fine tuners. The bridge, nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece have all been professionally set-up to proper playing specifications at David Bromberg's Fine Violins in Wilmington, Delaware. It is currently is set-up with D'Addario Pro-Arte strings. This violin was built on an Italian Stradivarius model, and the arching, edges, and corners are precisely made. All 4 corners are blocked. The dimensions are as follows: Length of the back: 357mm Length of the neck: 130mm Body stop: 195mm There are no cracks or repaired cracks in the top, back, ribs, or pegbox. and there is very little wear anywhere on this violin. It is in remarkably good condition for a ~120 year-old violin! This violin is an authentic violin made by Roth and Lederer, and is set-up and ready to play.
