If you’re looking for a vintage fiddle that sounds great in all styles of music, then you should try this one. It plays way above its pay-grade!
This is a nice example from the early 20th century German violin making trade, and it is in very good condition. It is labeled:
“Orchestra Favorite
Copy of Antonius Stradivarius”
This violin sings with a powerful resonant tone from low to high. The sound is clean and full all the way up the neck. It has a strong resonant voice on the lower strings, and a sparkling soprano voice on the higher strings. It has excellent bow response, lots of tone colors, and loads of volume. It is a fun and interesting violin to play; the kind of violin that you don’t want to put down.
Send me an email and let me know what kind of music you like to play, and I will make you a sound sample.
It has been professionally fitted with a new bridge, sound-post, Wittner tailpiece, and chinrest. The fingerboard has been planed and dressed. The only repair on the violin is a glued crack under the treble f-hole (see pictures). There are no sound post or bass bar cracks.
(Note: The new bridge is cut with a standard classical curve whereas the old bridge has a flatter curve that some old-timey fiddlers prefer. The old bridge will be included in case you might prefer it. I have never tried it.)
The fiddle is fitted with a fresh set of Helicore medium strings. The bridge, nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece are all professionally set-up to proper proper playing specifications. The pegs are made of rosewood, and turn easily.
The tone woods are very nice. The two-piece top is made from spruce with a narrow grain, and the back, neck, and ribs are made from maple with medium figure and flame.
The violin’s original deep burgundy red varnish is striking, and it has a lovely fine craquelar. It has an original “Parisian finish” with black highlighting on the rib joins and the scroll fluting like many fine French violins. It has been played a lot in its life, and the varnish has had some chips, nicks, and scuffs, and some have been touched-up with a darker varnish.
This violin was built on an Italian Stradivarius model, and the arching and edges, f-holes, and corners are expertly carved. The length of the back is 360mm. All 4 corners are blocked. As you can see from the pictures, the interior workmanship on this violin is excellent.
