The violin is labeled Ernst Heinrich Roth
Bubenreuth-Erlangen 1966
Reproduction of
Josef Guarnerius
Cremona 1734
The Roth brand and violin serial number are branded inside the back above the label. This is a model No. 53 II-R of the Roth Concert series. I have attached a picture of the 1964 advertisement for this instrument called "The Soloist."
This violin has a resonate and full tone with plenty of volume across all four strings, typical of Roth violins. The lower strings have a rich warm response, and the higher strings sing with a clear silvery voice. The violin is very responsive to the bow. There are no weaknesses in any of the strings, and the sound is clean and full all the way up the neck. It has an excellent range of volume from very soft to very loud.
Send me a message to request a sound sample, and tell me what kind of music you play (old-timey, classical, or contest). This violin is great for all of these styles.
The tone woods are outstanding. The top is made from spruce with a narrow grain, and the back, neck, and ribs are made from maple with beautiful figure and flame. The original red-brown varnish is highly transparent, and was beautifully applied over a golden ground.
The violin has very little wear along the edges. It has some nicks here and there, but is in otherwise excellent condition. There are no cracks or repaired cracks (see pictures).
The fingerboard and tailpiece are high-quality dense black ebony. The Roth Casperi pegs turn easily and make the violin very easy to tune (actually much easier than regular pegs).
This violin was built on a Guarnerius “Del Gesu” model, and the arching, edges, and corners are excellent. The length of the back is 356mm. All 4 corners all have real blocks and carefully cut linings. The workmanship is clean and precise both inside and out. The scroll and peg-box are well-carved and the f-holes are crisp, symmetrical, and cleanly cut with a slight fluting in the bottom wings. The purfling has nice “bee-stings” in the corners.
The fiddle was recently professionally examined and set-up, including a new bridge and new John Pearce strings. It is ready to play!
This Ernst Heinrich Roth violin will provide a lifetime of playing enjoyment.
