This is a fine instrument that showcases the work of one the best Markneukirchen shops during one of Germany’s greatest eras in making. This particular instrument has been owned and played for years by a jazz violinist in the DC area. All of his violins were chosen for their tone. It has a solidly repaired crack on the lower bout of the top (not in the soundpost area) but is otherwise free of structural damage. You can see some wear to the varnish from plenty of playing, although a good deal of the look is the antiquing. It was made in 1920 for the William Lewis shop in Chicago, as stated on the label. It bears the maker’s brand on the back as well. In 2022 it was appraised for $7500 by Fred Oster in Philadelphia. It was set up in the William Harris Lee workshop in Chicago and still has their bridge. It has a warm and velvety tone and it’s easy to play. It is a player’s instrument just waiting for its next devotee.
