Restoration of old "country" fiddles (i.e., not valuable or historic instruments) usually includes inspecting all glued joints & gluing where needed; repairing cracks; inspecting pegs, end pins, nuts, tailpieces & replacing where necessary; inspecting bridge and refitting or replacing as needed; replacing soundpost. If the finish is in very bad shape or if a previous refinishing job was badly done, I will sometimes remove the finish, match coloration, shellac, varnish, wet sand, and polish. I factor-in sound quality when setting a price for a fiddle. The less-expensive fiddles are fine for student or travel instruments. All fiddles are in good mechanical shape and sound about as good as they are capable of sounding.
