I recently set up this 1920's-40's violin that I presume was German made. There are two labels, one of which is the generic Antonius Stradivarius label. The other indicates the violin was imported and sold by J. W. Pepper & Son, a prominent American musical company based in Philadelphia.
The violin has proper construction inside and out and was set up with ebony parisian eye fittings and Dominant strings. The tone is lively and resonant with good volume - I would put it in the middle of the dark/bright spectrum. A short section of the center seam was reglued and reinforced with a cleat inside (the repair is under the tailpiece). There is a varnish blemish in the middle of the back. New pegs, bridge, soundpost, tail piece, chinrest and the fingerboard was properly shaped. A nice fiddle at a reduced price.
I can add a bow for $25. I have plenty of cases to choose from.
