This is a terrific, full-sized 4/4 violin made in Czechoslovokia in 1936 by Rudolf Prosek for the Rudolph Wurlitzer Co. New York, N.Y., and is is in remarkably terrific shape for being almost 80 years old.
The previous owner of this violin had had this violin since third grade when his parents bought it for him hoping he would be the next Paganini, or Perlman. That eventuality was not in the cards, but, in keeping with the Wurlitzer name and reputation, this is a high-quality instrument made by a European craftsman.
The label inside reads "Made in Czechoslovakia by violin maker Rudolf Prosek for Rudolph Wurlitzer Co New York, NY, and hand written in, reads (No.)4 (Yr.) 1936". The violin is in great condition with very little signs of wear, and no cracks. I have recently had it professionally set up with rosewood tuning pegs, chinrest, and a graduated tailpiece which improves the overall tone. The maple bridge has been trimmed and cut to yield a very comfortable action and to optimize the instrument's inherent tonality.
The tone of the violin is musical and focused, with a strong, woody bottom end, and a sweet upper register. In my subjective opinion, I believe this violin's voice would be suited for a variety of traditional genres, such as old-time, western swing, country, Celtic, and bluegrass, as well as classical styles. In short, it's just plain fun to play and feels good in the hand.
I have seen these selling recently for between $1000.00 and as high as $2000.00, so I have priced it toward the lower part of this range.
