1890 German G. Joseph Schuster Violin with Dark Pure Tone 4/4
This is a very fine old violin, with much history and stories to tell, and a fine, distinctive voice to tell them. This is the second (or third?) Schuster violin I have played and owned. Produced in one of the major German centers of violin-making, Markneukirchen, this old fiddle possesses a strong, dark, woody, and resonant tone, with a clear and pure voice and easily accessible harmonics. Remarkably, this fiddle is in superb condition for its almost 130 years of age, and has a very full, deep sound.
The top is of fine-grained spruce with a warm orange varnish. Incredibly, it has no cracks or separations and is in excellent condition. Its back consists of beautiful 2-piece, narrowly-flamed maple with a orange-to-brown varnish. It is crowned by a gorgeously crafted scroll.
Recently strung with medium D’Addario Helicore strings for a warm and stable tone, it has fine tuners on all four strings for ease and convenience in tuning. Well-fitted ebony pegs, a planed and polished ebony fingerboard, and an ebony tailpiece and chin rest complete the components.
This is a full-sized fiddle, with a total length of 23 5/8", a back length of 14”, a 6 1/4” upper bout, and an 8” lower bout. It has big, fat, clear, deep G and D strings, and a very melodic upper register. This fiddle has a well-balanced sound, with good depth and power.”
This fiddle is, IMHO, ideal for bluegrass, old-time, country, swing, or other traditional genres. It will not disappoint.
It has no case, but will be packed well for a safe shipment.
